Obama Donors Frustrated With Romney’s Fundraising Superiority

President Barack Obama has fallen far behind his opponent Mitt Romney in the fundraising race, and that has many of the Democrat’s top donors worried.

The Romney campaign took in $101.3 million in July, far surpassing the Obama campaign’s $75 million. That marks the third straight month in which Romney has raked in more than Obama.

The incumbent’s campaign is trying to put the best face possible on its financial defeat. “We know we will be outspent — that’s just the reality,” Jen Psaki, a campaign spokeswoman told reporters, according to The Hill.

But some of Obama’s backers aren’t quite so accepting. “I keep telling people we need to step it up a bit,” a veteran Obama donor told the news service. “Now’s the time, not two months from now. We’re still winning in the overall game, but we can’t be complacent. “We need to keep throwing in more money.”

Romney and the Republicans do still trail Obama and the Democrats in total fundraising — $627 million to $495 million. But the president’s cash advantage has disappeared, as his campaign and Democrats went through about $400 million between January 2011 and the end of July, The New York Times reports.

The Romney campaign, Republican National Committee, and state party groups have $185.9 million cash on hand.

“Once again we see that for many people, this is more than a campaign, it is a cause,” said Spencer Zwick, the Romney Victory National Finance chairman. “We are well on track to raise the money to be successful in November.”

Things look a lot more bleak in Obama-land “Everything we hear from the president's camp is they're unhappy and perhaps surprised in their fundraising operation,” Michael Malbin, executive director of the Campaign Finance Institute, told The Hill. “It took a while for the Romney fundraising surge to happen, but when it happened, it happened strongly.”
