The fundraising gap developing between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama that has led to frantic pleas for cash from the president’s re-election campaign is not unique and may not matter in the fall, The Washington Post
Obama and the Democratic Party pulled in $71 million in June while Romney and the GOP brought in $106 million. The Post reports that Obama sent a note to supporters that said, “We’re getting outraised — a first for a sitting president, if this continues.”
However, the Post noted that in 2004, John Kerry outraised President George W. Bush every month after securing the Democratic nomination. Bob Dole also outraised President Bill Clinton as did Ronald Reagan when he ran against President Jimmy Carter.
“Nobody’s going to win or lose this election on the basis of not having enough money,” Bob Biersack, a senior fellow at the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, told the Post. “Each of them is going to have around $700 [million to] $800 million available. The idea that that’s not enough is just bizarre.”
