The Obama campaign, worried about the growing cash advantage for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and the outside groups backing him, is adding a series of big money fundraisers to the president’s schedule in coming weeks.

It is also expected to add more fundraisers than usual after the Democratic Convention, which takes place Sept. 3-6, The Hill reports.

Obama already is amping up the money-raising itinerary. On Monday afternoon, he traveled to New York for dinner with 60 attendees that cost them $40,000 per person. Last week Obama combed for cash in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and several spots on the West Coast.

Romney’s not shying away from the money hounding either. But his campaign will likely shift from exclusive fundraising events to public rallies in the weeks before Election Day, sources close to the campaign told The Hill. The public rallies should be more useful in attracting the independent voters who will likely decide the election’s outcome.

An Obama campaign aide told The Hill that the president will balance fundraisers with other events. But other sources admitted there’s heavy pressure to raise more cash.

“There’s a big push to keep the president competitive financially” during the closing weeks of the campaign, Don Peebles, a member of Obama’s Finance Committee, told The Hill.

“It’s just a reality of the campaign-finance situation as we have it,” another top Democrat who is working with one of the outside groups backing Obama, told the news service. “If you’re facing a flood of cash, you’re going to have to spend more time fundraising than in the past.”
