Nev. Lawmaker Open to Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Storage

Thursday, 10 Nov 2011 10:14 AM

By Greg McDonald

A break may be developing in Nevada’s congressional delegation over whether to allow the storage of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has shown no signs of dropping his opposition, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
The Sun reported Thursday that at least one Republicans in the five-member delegation, Rep. Mark Amodei, is open to the idea of continuing federal funding to develop Yucca Mountain as the nation’s main nuclear waste storage facility.
In the past, the entire delegation — currently made up of two Democrats, including Reid, and three Republicans — was opposed to locating any storage facility in the state.
Amodei told the Sun that he’s open not only to the continued development of the Yucca Mountain site but to allowing nuclear waste into the state as well even while the facility is under development.
“I have said, and continue to say, nobody wants a nuclear landfill,” Amodei told the Sun. “But I think to make that the last sentence is not realistic.”
As Senate majority leader, Reid has not hesitated to use his power to shut down all efforts to move the decades-old Yucca Mountain plan forward.
But according to the Sun, another fight over the project is expected to come later this month when Illinois Republican Sen. Mark Kirk tries to reintroduce legislation aimed at keeping the project alive.
