Seismic activity early Tuesday indicated that North Korea carried out its third successful nuclear test, an event later confirmed by experts from several nations and North Korea itself.

As usual, many Twitter users took the opportunity to make wisecracks. Comedian Tim Heidecker was among the first to satirize the news.

Others followed suit, painting the dictatorship as relatively harmless, despite the nuke test.

A minority of Twitter users took the situation seriously.

NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd confirmed President Obama will mention the event in his State of the Union address this evening.

The general sentiment is best summed up in this tweet.
