According to Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall, NFL players are using Viagra while on the football playing field for — what else? — performance enhancement.
Apparently, the increased blood flow Viagra gives the body helps in getting oxygen around the body faster and also aids in endurance.
The Viagra revelation snapped to public attention because of another specialized drug that’s being blamed for a lot of NFL suspensions of late: Adderall.
Marshall was questioned about the attention deficit disorder drug during a Bears press conference on Wednesday.
According to Brad Biggs, a Chicago-based football reporter for the Chicago Tribune, Marshall played aloof on the stimulant, but steered the conversation toward the little blue pill.
“I don’t know too much about Adderall,” Marshall said. "I know guys, it is such a competitive league, guys try anything just to get that edge. I'm fortunate enough to be blessed with size and some smarts to give me my edge. But some guys, they'll do whatever they can to get an edge. I've heard of some crazy stories. I've heard guys using like Viagra, seriously. Because the blood is supposedly thin, some crazy stuff. So, you know, it's kind of scary with some of these chemicals that are in some of these things, so you have to be careful."
Marshall did not say if he’d personally encountered a player under the influence of the enhancement drug. But, according to Yahoo Sports’ Jay Busbee, the drug has been widely used in other sports for some time, particularly cycling.
No NFL player has been suspended for Viagra use yet, but at least a dozen players this year have blamed Adderall for their 2012 suspensions, according to USA Today.
