National Boss Day is here, giving employees an opportunity to show their appreciation for their sometimes unappreciated supervisors.

The recognized day began in 1958 when a State Farm Insurance Company employee from Deerfield, Ill., named Patricia Bays Haroski registered the holiday with the United States Chamber of Commerce, according to TimeandDate.com.

The purpose of the day was two-fold: strengthen and build bonds between employees and their supervisors, and "designate a day [for employees] to show appreciation [to their] boss and other bosses," according to TimeandDate.com.

Haroski reportedly chose Oct. 16 to be National Boss Day because it was her father's birthday.

Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner backed Haroski's registration four years later in 1962, officially proclaiming it a holiday. Since then, National Boss Day has spread to other countries around the world including Australia, India, and South Africa.

The pseudo-holiday has given way to a stream of tweets.

National Boss Day comes one day after National Grouch Day, and happens to fall on National Feral Cat Day and World Food Day.
