Pierce County, Washington has agreed to do more to accommodate jail inmates who practice Islam as part of a legal settlement announced Wednesday, according to the Tacoma News Tribune
County prisons will be required to provide Muslim inmates with halal meals and access to prayer rugs. They will also be permitted to congregate in groups of up to five for prayer and religious study, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington and the Public Interest Law Group.
The county also agreed to pay $200,000 in legal fees and attorney costs for the two convicted murderers who brought the case against the county in U.S. District Court.
County officials said the settlement was intended to avoid “the distraction and expense of prolonged litigation and allows our staff to focus on the work they do for the jail and for the public.”
