Major League Baseball has solidified its American and National league teams for the annual All-Star game in New York's Citi Field, and not a moment too soon with a record 39 first-time players dotting both rosters for Tuesday's contest.

The latest change came Sunday night when St. Louis Cardinal closer Edward Mujica was inserted into the roster for Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright, according to SBNation.com. Wainwright started the Cardinals game on Sunday and ruled ineligible to compete.

Mujica (1-1, 2.27 ERA), who has converted 26 of 27 save opportunities this year, joins teammates Wainwright, Yadier Molina, Carolos Beltran, Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig for a league topping six players. That should not come as a surprise with St. Louis owning a Major League-best 56-36 record through Saturday, according to SBNation.com.

Because of the replacements, the Kansas City Royals placed three players on the All-Star team for the first time since 1988. Pitcher Greg Holland found out Saturday he would make his first roster, joining teammates Alex Gordon and Salvy Perez, according to the Kansas City Star.

He made the trip to New York on the owner's private plane with Gordon and Perez, said the Star.

"It’s exciting," Holland told the newspaper. "I thought about it a lot leading up to (the original announcement), and I didn’t get in. But I was so happy about Salvy and Gordo that it was easy to move on from (any disappointment)."

Holland filled the spot of Seattle’s Hisashi Iwakuma, who started Sunday and cannot pitch in Tuesday's game.

Some, though, are not happy with all of the replacement players. The revolving door of All-Star replacements have left some to charge that players and managers are tarnishing the best professional league All-Star game, treating it more like a Little League contest, according to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times.

"The other issue in play is that baseball is in a transition period when it comes to its stars. A sensational young crop is on the way in (Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Stephen Strasburg, et al), and a worthy cadre is either gone, on its way out or in steep decline (Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Chipper Jones, Albert Pujols). The sport is left with no larger-than-life superstar in his prime, like the NBA with LeBron James and the NFL with Tom Brady."
