Police told the newspaper Varughese had a dispute with an acquaintance who gave him a ride from the party. Varughese reportedly got out of the car and went into the wooded area.
Police don't expect foul play, saying in a news release that "difficult terrain and low temperatures are believed to have contributed to Pravin’s difficulty finding his way out of the wooded area," the Tribune reported.
The university encouraged students to seek counseling if they needed it and released a statement following Varughese's death.
"This is a moment of unimaginable sorrow for the entire SIU community. We can find strength in our community and be reminded to hold fast to those we care about and cherish every moment we share with them," the university said, according to the Tribune.
