The Catholic League is casting some harsh criticism toward rapper Nicki Minaj for what they call her sacrilegious performance at the recent Grammy Awards of the song, “Roman Holiday.”

Minaj’s production included a display of Christian religious symbols along with a bizarre staged exorcism.

Prior to the event, the rap star walked the red carpet wearing a red nun's habit as she held hands with a man who was dressed in the attire of the Roman Catholic Pontiff.

Catholic League President Bill Donohue issued a statement via the organization’s website in which he blasted Minaj's performance.

“Minaj’s performance began on stage with a mock confessional skit. This was followed by a taped video depicting a mock exorcism. With stained glass in the background, she appeared on stage again with choir boys and monks dancing,” Dononue wrote.

He added, “Perhaps the most vulgar part was the sexual statement that showed a scantily clad female dancer stretching backwards while an altar boy knelt between her legs in prayer.”

Donohue directed blame toward the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences for allowing the rapper’s presentation to taint the awards show.

“None of this was by accident, and all of it was approved by the Recording Academy, which puts on the Grammys. Whether Minaj is possessed is surely an open question, but what is not in doubt is the irresponsibility of the Recording Academy. Never would they allow an artist to insult Judaism or Islam,” Donahue wrote.

The Catholic League has found it necessary to respond frequently over the last few years as recording artists and groups continue to emulate Madonna’s past music videos in which she combined Catholic iconography with sexually provocative images.
