McDonald's Family Meals Tested, Come in Box With Burger, Fries, Nuggets

Families may soon have a new quick meal option at McDonald’s with the Blitz Box, which contains a couple of Quarter Pounders, french fries, and a 20-piece Chicken McNuggets.

The family-sized meal deal, with a $14.99 price tag, is being tested in Kansas City, where it’s featuring the Chiefs football team on the Happy Meal-like packaging, and is part of a local promotion. While boxed meal deals have been popular with restaurants that make their money selling chicken – think KFC – they’ve been slow to catch on in fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s because cold burgers aren’t appetizing, Burger Business reported.

A slow-moving market, though, is pushing McDonald’s to give the boxed meal a shot, industry publication said.

The fast-food chain is facing more competition, high beef prices, and “shaky consumer confidence,” Bloomberg News said, and the result is low earnings for the past two quarters.

With that in mind, the Golden Arches team is looking at remaking its Dollar Menu items, expanding it to a Dollar Menu and More offering, which would include higher-priced foods, Bloomberg said. The new menu is being tested in five markets.

Although one analyst told Bloomberg that “it just sounds like they’ll be raising prices,” the news service said franchisees have become increasingly unhappy with the Dollar Menu, which went online in 2002, because of a poor bottom line on those items.

McDonald’s is offering new menu items, too, including an egg white sandwich and different types of Quarter Pounders. In addition, jumping on a bandwagon of chicken wing popularity, the restaurants will offer wings sometime this month.

Meals in a box are already in McDonald’s restaurants outside of the U.S., Burger Business said. Dinner Box meals have been available in Australia since 2010, and are in Malaysia and the Czech Republic. They contain combos of burgers, Big Macs, McNuggets, and Quarters Pounds. With fries, of course.

“There’s a trend in eating now to bundling,” said McDonald's CEO Don Thompson, according to Burger Business.
