An investigative piece by sports website Deadspin revealed that star Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o fabricated his heartrending, nationally-gripping tale of love and loss on Thursday.

Te'o told many media outlets that his girlfriend Lennay Kekuka was in a severe car crash that subsequently revealed she had leukemia. He said Kekuka died in September, within hours of Te'o's grandmother's passing. As it turns out, Kekuka was fake – there was no woman named Kekuka who died that day -- the Deadspin story revealed.

Without missing a beat, Twitter users took to the social network to crack jokes about the hoax. Below are some of the best responses to the scandal so far.
