A 21-year-old New Jersey man may have earned the title of America's dumbest criminal after he rolled a pot cigar, called a blunt in street parlance, while stopped at a red light next to a patrol car.
Christopher Beyel was in the front passenger seat of a 20-year-old woman's Honda Civic stopped at a red light in Sparta last week, NJ.com
reported, unaware that Officer Craig J. Grauerholz had pulled up next to him. Grauerholz reportedly watched "in amazement" as Beyel rolled marijuana into a cigar.
The driver eventually saw the officer watching and nudged Beyel, who put the blunt down. Grauerholz pulled the car over as the light turned green.

Beyel denied any knowledge of the blunt or possession of any illegal substance, police said, but Grauerholz received consent from the driver to search the vehicle and found one small plastic bag containing less than 50 grams of marijuana, one empty plastic bag containing pot residue, a package of "Zig-Zag Wraps," a metallic grinder with marijuana residue inside, and one cigar with marijuana in it.
The blunt was found stuffed between the console and front passenger seat, police told NJ.com.
Beyel was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released several hours later on his own recognizance and given a March 28 court date.
The story of Beyel's arrest kicked off a lively debate on pot legalization in the comments section of the NJ.com piece.

"I don't care if the drug is legalized. That doesn't mean do it in an operating car," wrote user "Spencer." "Why individuals are so eager to get stoned in a moving vehicle rather than waiting to get home or wherever they're going is just vexing. These two deserve jail for their lack of discipline alone."
"Legalize it. Regulate it. Tax it," wrote "sadpunkin."
