Bill Maher has announced that he will donate $1 million to the pro-Obama super PAC, Priorities USA Action.
In recently filed campaign finance documents, the super PAC, founded by former President Barack Obama aides, raised a grand total of $59,000 in January, and it had reportedly raised $4.4 million overall.
The host of HBO's “Real Time with Bill Maher” provides a pertinent illustration of how quickly super PAC funding can increase.
On his comedy special, “CrazyStupidPolitics: Live from Silicon Valley,” which was streamed on Yahoo.com, Maher disclosed a large campaign contribution.
“I would like tonight to announce a donation to the Obama super PAC, which has the very unfortunate tongue-twister name Priority [sic] USA Action. I know, it was named by Borat,” the comedian said. “But tonight, I would like to give that PAC $1 million.”
Earlier this month the Obama campaign reversed itself on the use of super PACs, which can raise unlimited amounts of cash to support political causes but cannot legally coordinate activities with the candidate of whom the entity supports.
Maher’s longtime publicist released a statement, which explained that the donation was made because, in the opinion of the comic, having a country governed by Obama rather than any of the GOP candidates is “worth a million dollars.”
The statement additionally indicated that, considering Maher’s financial interests, the comedian had taken the viewpoint that the donation was “the wisest investment” that he thought he could make.
The comic has encouraged other wealthy liberals to do the same.
