PPP Poll: Mack Closing In on Nelson In Florida Senate Race

Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fla., has cut deeply into Sen. Bill Nelson’s lead and now trails the Democrat by just two points in the latest survey by Public Policy Polling. Nelson had been holding a double digit lead.

The poll, which showed Nelson leading Mack 45 to 43, also found that Nelson’s approval rating has dropped from 40 percent to 35.

“The biggest thing contributing to Nelson's poor approval numbers is tepid support from the Democratic base,” PPP said in an analysis. “Only 50 percent of voters within his party approve of the job he's doing to 24 percent who disapprove. That's down from an already somewhat weak 58/15 spread in early June. In a head to head with Mack Nelson leads just 73-14 with Democrats where he previously had an 81-10 advantage.”

Mack has also pulled ahead with independents and now leads Nelson 45 to 38. However, just 25 percent of voters have a favorable opinion of Mack and 35 percent have an unfavorable view. Mack continues to enjoy a wide lead over GOP challengers.
