Not only did Lupita Nyong'o win the 2014 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in "12 Years a Slave," but her lip balm became a star as well.

When Oscar host Ellen Degeneres was taking singer Pharrell Williams’ hat around a group of A-list celebrities Sunday night collecting money for pizza, 31-year-old Nyong’o took her lip balm out of her purse and put it in the hat, saying she didn’t have any cash.

"Lupita's lip balm!” Degeneres said. “That's worth something!"

Since then, the Clarins HydraQuench Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm, retailing for $24, began “flying off the shelves immediately,” a Clarins spokesperson told Yahoo Shine, adding that retail stores and websites carrying the balm sold out of the product by Monday morning.

"This hilarious exchange became an instant social media hit, trending on Twitter as #lupitaslipbalm, and has sold out almost across the country overnight," the spokesperson said.

Examples of #lupitaslipbalm tweets were also posted by several marketing and social media outlets:

Nyong’o celebrated her 31st birthday on Saturday, the same day she won in the Best Supporting Actress category in the Independent Spirit Award ceremony for her role in “12 Years a Slave.”

Nyong' was born in Mexico but was raised in Nairobi and is a member of a prominent Kenyan family.

Many celebrities have become brand ambassadors for a variety of products over the years.

At the 2011 Golden Globes, actress Angelina Jolie was seen applying Chantecaille’s Brilliant Gloss in Love. The $33 lip gloss quickly sold out and was reportedly on backorder for several months.
