Radio and television ads that include Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and Sen. John McCain have been produced for the campaign of Sen. Richard Lugar, who faces a daunting re-election battle with surging state Treasurer Richard Mourdock.
The ads will likely run before the May 8 primary, but a final decision has not yet been made, a knowledgeable source tells
Politico.
Daniels ranks as Indiana’s most popular politician by a large margin. He received a 63 percent job approval rating in a recent Howey/DePauw Indiana Battleground poll. Daniels has called Lugar a "mentor, icon, and extraordinary public servant," in comments to
The Hill.
McCain has an elevated standing in the Republican Party on foreign policy, but lost Indiana in the 2008 presidential race. He and Lugar have served to together in the Senate since 1987. Lugar was first elected to the Senate in 1976.
A Howey/DePauw poll conducted March 26-28 showed Lugar leading Mourdock 42 percent to 35 percent. But a survey conducted Monday and Tuesday by John McLaughlin & Associates for Mourdock’s campaign showed the two nearly dead even, with Mourdock leading 42 percent to 41 percent.
