Louisiana man Ben Freeman launched a shooting spree Thursday that left three people dead, including his wife, ex-mother-in-law, and a former boss; he also killed himself, police said. Three others were wounded in the shootings.

Freeman, 38, a nurse who was fighting his ex-wife Jeanne Gouaux for custody went to the home of his former in-laws and shot three people before going to the home of a former boss who fired him and opening fire there as well, The Associated Press reported. Freeman then killed himself.

The dead victims were identified as Freeman’s former mother-in-law, Susan “Pixie” Gouaux; Milton Bourgeois, CEO of the Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital, the hospital from which Freeman was fired; and Denise Taylor Freeman, Freeman’s current wife, whom police found dead at Freeman’s home when they went looking for him. An autopsy concluded her cause of death was suffocation and drowning, according to the AP. She had a young son who apparently was not home at the time.

Wounded in the attack were L. Phillip Gouaux, Freeman’s ex-father-in-law; Andrea Gouaux, Freeman's ex-sister-in-law who was visiting her parents from her home in Texas; and Bourgeois’ wife, Ann Bourgeois, the AP said. Milton and Andrea Gouaux were in critical but stable condition, according to a police statement, while Ann Bourgeois was stable.

Jeanne Gouaux was not at her parents’ home at the time of the shooting, the AP said.

She and Freeman had been in court over late child support and custody issues. Jeanne Gouaux had filed protective orders against her ex-husband; he had supervised visits with their four kids.

Freeman was found dead in a vehicle along a highway several hours after the shootings, the police statement said.
