The incident is under investigation by the Lynchburg Police Department, the school said.
The Lynchburg News Advance reported that the student was identified
as Joshua Hathaway, 19, of Lubbock, Texas. Police did not give any information about what caused the confrontation, but did say the officer was treated and released from the hospital.
“The Liberty University community is deeply saddened by this tragic event and is prayerfully supporting all those impacted,” the school's president, Jerry Falwell Jr., said in the statement.
Junior Shaquille Cook told the News Advance he heard six or seven gunshots and then sirens at about 4:45 a.m. “I had a lot of 'why' questions," Cook told the local paper. "This is the last place I would ever imagine something like this would happen."
Police are expected to reveal more details about the situation at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.
