Former Sen. George LeMieux has dropped out of the Republican Senate primary in Florida and thrown his support behind Rep. Connie Mack.

In a video, LeMieux noted his campaign did not have the resources to take on Mack, who had received the backing of the GOP leadership.

“The decision has been made by party leadership that there is a better candidate to face Bill Nelson,” he said. “The establishment has thrown their support behind my competitor, Connie Mack.

"Ahead of us in the polls, the Mack name enjoys widespread recognition that can only be matched with substantial advertising or the opportunity to debate on statewide television, advertising which our finances cannot support, and debates, which my competitor won’t agree to,” LeMieux said.

LeMieux, who was appointed to the Senate in 2009 to finish the term of Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Flor., noted it was not in his “nature to step aside.”

“In order to have the best chance to defeat Bill Nelson and put the Senate in Republican hands today we will end our campaign. To continue would only hurt our chances in the fall and that is not something I will risk. Connie Mack will be our nominee. He has my support.”

Others Republicans seeking the nomination include former Rep. Dave Weldon, R-Flor., and retired Army Col. Mike McCalister. Mack has held double-digit leads over challengers in the primary.

Nelson has served two terms in the Senate, replacing Rep. Mack’s father who retired. He currently leads all GOP contenders for his seat.
