Larry Flynt, king of the Hustler porn empire, says he does not want to see the man who shot and paralyzed him in 1978 face – serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin – get the death penalty for his crimes.

"I have had many years in this wheelchair to think about this very topic," Flynt wrote in a guest column published on The Hollywood Reporter's website. "As I see it, the sole motivating factor behind the death penalty is vengeance, not justice, and I firmly believe that a government that forbids killing among its citizens should not be in the business of killing people itself."

Angry about an interracial photo that ran in Hustler, white supremacist serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin shot Flynt on the steps of a Georgia courthouse in 1978. The porn publisher suffered permanent spinal cord damage, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

Franklin was arrested a few years later for a string of other shootings and murders, and later confessed to attacking Flynt. He's been in prison since 1980, and is scheduled to be executed Nov. 20 in Missouri.

But Flynt says he'd rather punish Franklin himself.

"In all the years since the shooting, I have never come face-to-face with Franklin," he wrote. "I would love an hour in a room with him and a pair of wire-cutters and pliers, so I could inflict the same damage on him that he inflicted on me. But, I do not want to kill him, nor do I want to see him die."
