Larry Birkhead, the father of Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter, is opening up about what it’s like to be a single dad six years after his former Playboy Playmate girlfriend died of a toxic drug combination.
“Every little girl has this vision of their mom being a hero to them,” Larry Birkhead told ABC News
. “She doesn’t have that.”

Birkhead is a single dad raising 7-year-old Dannielynn in rural Kentucky. He recalled Anna Nicole as being “crazy. Wild. Volatile,” and finds it challenging reconciling that with Dannielynn’s expectations.
“At this point she thinks her mom was a very pretty person and she watches over everything and she’s in heaven,” he said.
Birkhead also talked about the challenges of being a single father raising a precocious 7-year-old girl on an E! News special
. He said that while he’s not really ready to enter into a serious relationship, his daughter is trying to hook him up.
Birkhead had earlier told The Huffington Post that his daughter is a well-adjusted child.
“She’s in school here, in Girl Scouts, and doing all the normal things that normal kids do,” Birkhead said. “She’s just like any other kid. She’s funny, she’s fearless, she’s curious.”
Birkhead met Anna Nicole Smith while he was working as a photographer in 2004. They rarely communicated after she got pregnant, and Smith fled to the Bahamas. Dannielynn was born in a Nassau hospital.
“I had to go onto Anna’s website and pay a monthly subscription just to see how she was telling fans how the baby was, and that’s how I got my information,” Birkhead told The Huffington Post.
Smith had listed lawyer Howard K. Stern as Dannielyn’s father on her birth certificate. A paternity test showed otherwise, and Birkhead was awarded full custody.
ABC says that Dannielyn is in line to inherit $49 million from her mother’s estate. She also does modeling for Guess.
