A Disney release described the movie as a “contemporary live-action adventure-comedy that taps into Disney’s most evil villains and introduces their children — a modern-day generation of teenagers who ultimately question the evil that’s always been in their hearts.”

Emmy Award-winning director and choreographer Kenny Ortega will work on the movie, along with choreographer Paul Becker and executive producer Wendy Japhet.

Others starring in the movie include Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, Cameron Boyce, and Mitchell Hope. Dove Cameron, from "Liv and Maddie," will play Mal, Chenoweth’s daughter in the movie.

Although many fans were excited by Chenoweth’s new role, some people had a hard time seeing her as Maleficent, the evil queen from "Sleeping Beauty."

“Yes, because tiny, blonde, and squeaky-voiced is what I think of when I think of Maleficent,” one commenter wrote on an Entertainment Weekly article.

But another stood up for Chenoweth’s abilities. “To be fair, Chenoweth is a highly trained vocalist, capable of changing her voice to sound very different from its normal, squeaky tone,” the commenter said. “While I admit I'm surprised by such a casting choice, I'll wait to see how she looks/sounds before passing judgment. :)”

Many just expressed interest in the movie’s plot.

“Disney is sinking a lot into this it seems. I doubt they would get Chenoweth if they didn't have a plan,” one said. “What on Earth could they have done with Maleficent post-Sleeping Beauty I wonder... Congratulations, Disney, you have me curious about a DCOM for the first time since I was thirteen.”
