The children's book is about Richards’ relationship with his grandfather, Theodore Augustus Dupree, who was a jazz musician.
“I have just become a grandfather for the fifth time, so I know what I’m talking about,” the 70-year-old Richards said in a statement. “The bond, the special bond, between kids and grandparents is unique and should be treasured. This is the story of one of those magical moments. May I be as great a grandfather as Gus was to me.”
The hardcover book will have an accompanying CD, according to the New York Times
Richards, who released his autobiography “Life” in 2010, will work on the text with Barnaby Harris and Bill Shapiro.
The book will include photographs from Richards’ family, said Rolling Stone
Theodora Richards, 28, studied art at the New York Academy of Art and the School of Visual Arts.
"To be able to explore my father's relationship with his grandfather was a gift in itself. The things that I've learnt during this whole process have just been life affirming," she said, according to Rolling Stone.
The announcement prompted surprised reactions on Twitter.
