Lifelong Democrat Toby Keith Donates to Rick Perry's Campaign

By James Hirsen

Federal Election Commission (FEC) records indicate that Toby Keith has donated to the presidential campaign of Texas Governor Rick Perry, according to Forbes.

Keith’s song, “Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue (The Angry American)," which was released following the 9/11 attacks, contains the following lyrics: "Justice will be served and the battle will rage. This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage . . ."

However, contrary to Keith's image and song lyrics, the country music icon is not a Republican. Rather, he is from a family of Southern Democrats.

Keith recently told Fox News Channel’s Mike Huckabee, “There's never been, as far as I know, before me ever, a Republican anywhere in my family.”

The country music artist reportedly switched his voter registration in 2009 from Democratic to Independent.

Keith told CBS News in 2007 that, despite his support for President George W. Bush, he himself was not a conservative.

“It's amazing how many Republicans call me for support. And then they go, 'You're a Republican right?' And you go, 'Well I'm actually a lifetime Democrat,'" he said.

He continued, "And then they go, 'Oh, sorry.' And the Democrats want so bad — the real liberals really want to hate me. And then they go, 'I still hate you, but I can't believe you're a Democrat.' So I'm not a real political guy. I'm a very patriotic guy.”

In a signal that the 50-year-old country star may currently be more willing to align himself with the GOP, last quarter Keith donated $2,500 to Perry's presidential campaign, according to FEC records.
