Kathleen Kane was sentenced to 10 to 23 months in prison on Monday for orchestrating a grand jury leak against a political rival, a stunning downfall for the former Pennsylvania attorney general and a rising Democratic Party star.

Kane was taken from the Montgomery County courtroom in Norristown in handcuffs. She was released later in the evening on $75,000 bail pending appeals that are predicted to go on for months, reported PennLive.com.

Kane, 50, was found guilty in August by a state Common Pleas Court jury of two felony perjury charges and seven misdemeanor counts, which forced her out of office, said The New York Times.

District Judge Wendy Demchick-Alloy told Kane that while she was sympathetic after one of her teenage sons testified on her behalf, it was Kane who created the circumstances that led to her sentence, said PennLive.

"I feel sorry for them, that they have to go through this, but that is a decision you made and not this court," said Demchick-Alloy. "When you put your hand on the Bible, you weren't thinking of them. You were thinking of yourself."

Kane, who won election to the attorney general's post in 2012, questioned her predecessor's handling of the Penn State child sex assault case involving convicted football coach Jerry Sandusky and feuded with one of the prosecutors, reported WTAE-TV.

It was that feud and other sensitive investigations that led to the leaked grand jury information, said WTAE. Kane was found to have had a campaign consultant pass confidential files to a reporter about a corruption case the prosecutor had declined to charge before he left the office, authorities said, per WTAE-TV.

Aides testified that Kane then tried to frame someone else for the leak, reported WTAE-TV.

One highlight of Kane's time in office was her investigation of pornography that she charged was viewed on state computers by judges, lawyers and other public employees, leading to the resignation of two state Supreme Court justices.
