When veteran Hollywood actress Jodie Foster stunned the Golden Globes audience on Sunday with a moving speech that revealed publicly for the first time that she is gay and seemed to indicate that she is retiring , critics and celebrities lauded her for her honesty, openness and tact.

Yet, many were left confused about what the 50-year-old Foster actually said.

"It will take many days for a full exegesis of the text, so everyone get to work on that," wrote Hank Stuever at the Washington Post. "Maybe her words were some sort of brave sexual confession/declaration of privacy," wrote Christopher John Farley at The Wall Street Journal. "Your call. People are going to analyze this speech like it’s the final episode of “Lost.” (http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/debate/after-jodie-fosters-speech-at-the-golden-globes-do-celebrities-have-a-responsibility-to-be-role-models-8450813.html)

Everyone certainly agreed the message was deeper than meets the eye — the consensus was essentially that Foster had come out as gay, that she advocated stricter privacy in Hollywood, and that perhaps she was retiring from acting.

"And then once backstage herself," Hollie McKay wrote at Fox News, "Foster backtracked completely on her perplexing words about ending her life in front of the lens, and seemed shocked that it was interpreted that she was retiring."

The warmest reception to Foster's remarks came from fellow Hollywood insiders, particularly when her comments on keeping her life private resonated with the crowd. The room stood to cheer Foster's take.

"Glee" creator Ryan Murphy kept it simple.

Drummer Questlove from The Roots made a joke of the way Foster skirted the issue.
Others were equally inspired.
Former pro baseball player Jose Canseco seemed confused about how the whole thing works.
