Does the Jersey Devil really exist?

The question has bounced around dorm rooms, bars and newsrooms for decades without a conclusive answer.

Most recently, the controversy around the mythical creature was reignited by a Reddit user's post of a photo showing a peculiar hairless creature walking along a fence, prompting an array of comments including many suggestions that the animal was none other than the Jersey Devil itself.

With its long snout, long toes, and long tail, the black-skinned creature that in some ways bears a resemblance to the hairless Sphynx cat with its wrinkled skin doesn't at first glance look like any known rodents, notes NJ.com.

The photo was originally posted late Wednesday night on Reddit by user Diabolicism, under the headline: "What the hell is this animal!? (spotted in NJ)."

Within hours, the post was flooded with more than 600 responses on Reddit.

In addition to the talk of a Jersey Devil, commenters also suggested the creature was "El Chupacabra!" the legendary creature that stalks the Americas attacking and drinking the blood of livestock.

Others suggestions included a gargoyle and some sort of relation to the Montauk Monster, referring to the carcass of an unknown animal that washed ashore in the summer of 2008 on a Long Island beach.

But the animal turned out to be a hairless squirrel and the photo was taken in Oklahoma, having initially surfaced on WildCareOklahoma's Facebook page and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation on May 8.

The online debate was definitely ended when the Department of Wildlife Conservation weighed in on the matter and declared the animal was a hairless squirrel, NJ.com reported.

The Jersey Devil is a mythical creature that has its origins in Native American folklore.

Though descriptions vary, it is generally described as a hooved, winged creature with clawed hands and a forked tail having the head of a goat.
