Jay Carney Calls Intern's Question on Zimmerman Safety 'Ridiculous' (Video)

A 16-year-old intern with The Daily Caller succeeded in annoying White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, who slammed the teen's question during a press conference Wednesday as "ridiculous."

"Because of the death threats being received by George Zimmerman and his parents, is the president going to take any action for their security or are they on their own?" asked intern Gabe Finger, a junior at the Potomac School in McLean, Va.

Carney responded that it would be a matter for the Florida authorities to handle and that he has not heard anything about any threats. The president, he added, opposes "any violence of any kind."

"So they’re on their own?" Finger asked again.

"You can editorialize all you want and I have no doubt that you will, but that is a ridiculous statement," Carney snapped.

Some criticized the conservative Caller for sending an intern to a press briefing. Co-founders Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel addressed those concerns Wednesday in a statement on their website.

"Some reporters in Washington are asking why The Daily Caller sent out intern Gabe Finger to the White House press briefing this afternoon. Talk about missing the point," Carlson and Patel wrote. "The real question is, why did it take a 16-year-old intern to raise an obvious and important question that the White House press corps should have asked days ago? We don’t care how old Gabe Finger is. It doesn’t matter to us what his credentials are. All we care about is how well he does his job. Today he did it a lot better than most White House reporters."

Accompanying the statement was a tongue-in-cheek YouTube clip of Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All," a song with lyrics that include "I believe the children are our future/Teach them well and let them lead the way."

Twitter users praised Finger's question and blasted Carney's response.
