A three-day preliminary trial has wrapped up for James Holmes, accused of fatally shooting 12 people and wounding or injuring 59 others last July at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colo.
New, grisly details have emerged about the 25-year-old graduate school dropout and a judge ordered there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to a trial.
However, Holmes' defense team said it was not ready for the arraignment scheduled for Friday morning. The defense team, which has argued that Holmes is mentally ill, has not said why they needed more time to enter a plea.
Holmes, who is being held without bail, is charged with 166 counts, including murder, attempted murder, and other charges related to the shooting.
While the media has reported what Holmes was like before the shooting – a loner who was known for being quiet, the fact that he had no profiles on social media save two dating profiles, a squeaky clean criminal record, and a stellar academic record that was tarnished only weeks before the shooting – there is a lot the public does not know about him.
Some of the details to have come forth include how investigators say he amassed an arsenal of guns and ammunition, how he booby-trapped his apartment to explode, and his bizarre behavior after his arrest. Following is what you don't know about James Holmes.
His erratic behavior while in jail has been child-like:
To preserve possible gunshot residue right after the shooting, police placed paper bags over Holmes' hands. Colorado public defender Daniel King noted in a report that Holmes began moving his hands "in a talking puppet motion." He also allegedly tried to take a staple out of a table and stick it into an electrical socket.
He took many disturbing photos of himself right before the attack:
Holmes had a menacing smile plastered across his face and wide eyes in some photos. In others, he stuck his tongue out and posed with a handgun. During the second day of the pretrial hearing, attorneys pulled up the photos. Family members of victims said that he smiled and smirked at disturbing self-portraits – he took many on his iPhone – and images of weapons shown while in court.
In addition to a booby-trapped apartment, he had an entire arsenal of weapons:
According to CBS, prosecutors said he spent months amassing tear gas grenades, two Glock handguns, a shotgun, and an AR-15 rifle, along with 6,295 rounds of ammunition, targets, body armor, and chemicals, prosecutors said. He had obtained the guns legally and tried to join a local gun range. Holmes also purchased chemicals for his apartment, including improvised napalm, as well as thermite, a substance which burns so hot that water can't extinguish the blaze. His apartment was loaded up with napalm, thermite, gasoline, smokeless gun powder, rifle bullets, a remote-controlled car and a boom box that played very loud techno music to lure bystanders and kill as many people as possible. The ultimate plan, according to an FBI agent, was to divert as many resources away from the theater as possible.
He has a legion of supporters, including one woman who says she has a crush on him:
Misty Benjamin, 30, has died her hair red in solidarity with Holmes and carries a photo of him in her wallet. Benjamin is an Aurora resident and says she doesn't think Holmes is an "animal" or "a bad guy" and that she still supports him. "We are not supposed to go through life alone, so why should James go through his trial alone?" she told The Daily Beast. "James is not alone, he has me." On her wrist she wears a pink plastic bracelet with the word "besties." Her best friend from Michigan, whom she met on the Facebook page "James Holmes is Innocent," wears a matching bracelet. Benjamin is one of several supporters who attended the hearing.
He may have had a getaway plan following the attack:
According to police testimony, Holmes' two-door hatchback was full of items indicating he might have planned to flee after the shooting. Tire-puncturing devices, a canister of tear gas, a .40-caliber handgun, ammunition, Holmes' iPhone and various backpacks were found in the car, according to Yahoo News. However, when approached him Holmes did not resist.
