Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has endorsed the re-election of Democrat Rep. Howard Berman who is in a tight primary race with fellow Democrat Rep. Brad Sherman for a House seat in the newly created 30th District in Los Angeles.
Issa gave the Democrat his endorsement at the annual American Spirit Awards.
In front of an audience of producers, writers, and directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Issa said, “I don't tell people to vote for Democrats, and if there were a good Republican in the race, I wouldn't tell you to vote for Howard, probably.” He then added, “But the fact is Howard is in the race of his lifetime, and I want him back.”
“The influential Republican praised Berman for his creativity, suggesting that he is one of the most creative elected officials with one of the most creative minds” that Issa has served with in Congress.
In a recent debate over the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) legislation, Issa was on Berman’s opposing side. Berman had aligned with Hollywood in support of SOPA while Issa worked with Silicon Valley to successfully stop the bill’s passage, offering instead the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act, a piece of legislation referred to as OPEN.
“I will tell you there will be a deal,” Issa told the entertainment industry audience. “It may not be SOPA and it may not be OPEN and all the other names you have heard. There will be a deal. Congress has to address this.”
