Three days into selling its iPad Mini, Apple announced Monday it has sold 3 million of its tablet computers over the weekend. The company was also selling its newer version of the regular-sized iPad, the iPad 4.
Though Apple did not give specific numbers on which models of the iPad had sold, the total number was twice as many as the last release of Wi-Fi-only iPads, which launched in March of this year. That version of the gadget is enabled on 4G wireless cellular networks; newer ones are not.
Tech analysts had initially given much more conservative predictions for the sales, even after the massive sales figures of the iPhone 5. The new devices were launched in 34 countries and many stores reportedly ran out, according to tech-blog Mashable
“Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad. We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand,” Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said.
Apple’s stock (AAPL
) was up 1 percent early Monday after the announcement.
