Most of the deaths so far are from one car.

"It has been reduced to a mangled iron mesh," senior police officer Amrendra Sainger told The Associated Press. "We do not know how many people were there."

The cause of the crash is under investigation. The passenger train slammed on its brakes, but was unable to stop before hitting the freight train. The station master disappeared after the collision, the AP reported.

Most of those killed were farm workers returning home. The express train’s driver died from injuries sustained in the collision, and the assistant driver was in critical condition, according to the AP.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted condolences.

Hundreds of people have died in train crashes in India, according to the BBC.

About 18 million people ride India’s 9,000 passenger trains every day.

Modi, who was sworn in as Prime Minister on Monday, has promised to make infrastructure a top priority, including building new interstate highways and a network of bullet trains, according to Reuters.
