At least 40 people were killed when an express passenger train slammed into a freight train in northern India on Monday.
Six cars on the passenger train derailed when the train rammed a parked freight train near a railway station in Uttar Pradesh state.

Most of the deaths so far are from one car.
"It has been reduced to a mangled iron mesh," senior police officer Amrendra Sainger told The Associated Press
. "We do not know how many people were there."
The cause of the crash is under investigation. The passenger train slammed on its brakes, but was unable to stop before hitting the freight train. The station master disappeared after the collision, the AP reported.
Most of those killed were farm workers returning home. The express train’s driver died from injuries sustained in the collision, and the assistant driver was in critical condition, according to the AP.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted condolences.

Modi, who was sworn in as Prime Minister on Monday, has promised to make infrastructure a top priority, including building new interstate highways and a network of bullet trains, according to Reuters
