Two brands of popular ice cream issued recalls last month due to a risk of listeria, a dangerous bacteria often found on meat, dairy products, and even produce like lettuce.

Cedar Crest Ice Cream recalled three flavors: chocolate chip cookie dough; Monster Cookie; and Pirate's Bounty, while Weight Watchers pulled its Smart Ones Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundae, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The ice cream all contained cookie dough that came from third-party supplier Aspen Hills of Garner, Iowa, which Fox News reported had already been implicated in a voluntary Blue Bell recall of some of its ice cream products.

It is possible that none of the dough used in the ice cream products had reached consumers because Aspen Hills sells to the manufacturers, not directly to consumers.

Listeria bacteria can cause listeriosis, a dangerous and sometimes fatal infection that impacts the very young, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths for pregnant women, according to The Huffington Post.

The Huffington Post reported that although recalls related to listeria have increased in recent years, it isn’t likely due to more listeria being in food than before.

Manufacturers used to think that listeria was only in hot dogs and lunch meat, but now have started to realize that it can be in dairy products, fruits, and vegetables.

This realization has led to more frequent testing of manufacturing facilities, which has led to more frequent recalls when listeria is found.

“We’re looking into different food systems and our awareness of where [listeria] is changing, which is actually good news in a way,” Purdue University professor of food science Haley Oliver told The Huffington Post.

“The more we understand which foods are potential risk factors or potential reservoirs, the more likely we are to actually reduce listeriosis,” Oliver said.

According to the FDA announcements, no illnesses or complaints had been reported prior to the two recalls.
