SC Panel Backs Bill to Promote HPV Vaccine in Schools

Wednesday, 18 Apr 2012 12:30 PM

By Andra Varin

A South Carolina legislative panel moved forward a bill that would encourage parents to have their middle-school children vaccinated against a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cancer.

The state House’s Medical, Military, and Municipal Affairs Committee passed a measure that would require state health officials to provide parents of children entering the seventh grade with educational brochures about the human papillomavirus, or HPV, The State newspaper reported Wednesday.

The educational material would encourage parents, but not require them, to have both boys and girls vaccinated against HPV.

“There is a growing need for this type of prevention,” Rep. Terry Alexander, a Democrat from Florence, said Tuesday. “It’s cheaper to prevent than to [care for] someone who has this particular disease.”

Each year more than 6 million people in the United States are infected with HPV, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
