After a vote by their peers, two boys have been voted "Cutest Couple" at their New York high school, skyrocketing them to instant Internet stardom.
Brad Taylor and Dylan Meehan earned the senior yearbook superlative after one of their classmates at Carmel High School in Putnam County, N.Y., lobbied to get the homosexual couple added to the ballot in the "Cutest Couple" category. Principal Kevin Carroll allowed it.
"Kids aren't hiding anymore,"
Carroll told Newsday." They feel free, and they feel safe in the school — that's the way it is.
Chelsea Blaney, the friend who campaigned for Taylor and Meehan, posted a photo of the pair on her Tumblr page over the weekend, and the story soon went viral.
"Two of my best friends won 'Cutest Couple' of our senior class,"
Blaney wrote. "First time in my school history a same sex couple has even been able to run for this category, not to mention winning it. So proud of them, and my school."
Taylor and Meehan said they were shocked at being voted "Cutest Couple."
"This whole thing has been a bit surreal for us
because we have been raised to believe that love is love," the boys said in a joint statement to the Huffington Post. "We never realized that our happiness and openness would inspire so many individuals. The support we have received from our family, friends, and even strangers has led us to believe that our affection for each other is normal. ... When we started dating a year ago, the thought of a photo of us traveling throughout the world would be a bit frightening, but now we are proud to be part of the LGBT community."
Talyor and Meehan also received an outpouring of support on Twitter.
