Hazel Hammersley: Pizza Plea Taped in Hospital Window Goes Viral

By Morgan Chilson   |   Monday, 15 Jul 2013 06:09 PM

Hazel Hammersley, a 2-year-old battling cancer at the Los Angeles Children's Hospital, got a load of pizza after the power of social media resulted in the delivery of an overwhelming number of pizzas to her hospital room this past weekend.

Gawker reported that a Reddit user snapped a photo of a sign that family of the young girl jokingly put in their hospital window: “Send Pizza. Rm 4112.” As soon as that photo hit Reddit, pizza orders started hitting the hospital – to the point that the hospital asked Reddit to let people know not to send any more.

On Reddit, a picture appeared showing joyful smiles of children eating pizza.

Hazel’s mom, Lauren, posted the family’s blog, called “Our Little Hazelnut,” that they were thrilled with the pizza deliveries. She included pictures of them “passing the time” by putting tape on the windows to spell out their pizza plea.

Lauren wrote that they didn’t expect any response from their sign and nothing happened for a couple of days. Then the Reddit picture went to No. 1 on the site and pizza poured in.

“Then someone ended up posting a link to our Blog, Facebook, and Donation Page, which then all went bananas! Hazel woke up from her nap to the smell of pizza and was so excited to chow down,” her mom wrote.

“We have been absolutely humbled and surprised by the outpouring of love and support from the online community and can only hope and pray that this brings awareness to Neuroblastoma and the Childhood Cancer Community,” she said.

Their family foundation page and Facebook page lit up with comments from people showing support.

Mel Ortega wrote on Facebook, “This was a very sweet story, I spent a lot of time in the hospital with my little girl Mia (all leukemia), so I know how blessed y’all must have felt for so many people to show love!!! PS Hazel is BEAUTIFUL!!!”

Someone on Reddit even suggested making it an annual event to do a pizza blast to 100 Children’s Hospitals.
