As many as 15 celebrities, politicians, and top government officials have been targeted by Internet hackers who have posted their social security numbers, credit card account numbers, and banking information on website originating out of Russia.

News broke Monday that first lady Michelle Obama, FBI Director Robert Mueller, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck, Vice President Joe Biden, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Mel Gibson, Britney Spears, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Attorney General Eric Holder, and others had been "doxxed."

"Doxxing" is a cyber crime that involves obtaining information about a person based on a limited set of initial information and then publicizing the findings, according to the FBI.

The victims' credit reports, outstanding bills, addresses, and mortgage information were just some of the items posted on the website exposed.su throughout the day Monday, according to Gawker, which published screen shots from the site and some of the financial information listed. As of Tuesday, it appears that the information is no longer available on the Russian site.

The LAPD has launched an investigation and the FBI is also looking into the case, according to TMZ.

Most of the victims have declined to comment on the incident, but Beck, the LAPD chief, released a statement Monday night.

"LAPD detectives are investigating the recent disclosure of Chief Beck's personal information," the statement reads. "Apparently this is not necessarily a hacking incident. It is called 'doxxing.' This has happened to the Chief on two other occasions prior to this in a similar nature post Occupy LA. We are not at liberty to discuss the others mentioned in the web post. There will be no further comments or press conference on this matter."
