Brewer Vetoes Campus Gun, Birth Record Bills

Tuesday, 19 Apr 2011 05:51 AM

By Hiram Reisner

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer says she is a strong advocate of the Second Amendment but she vetoed a bill that would allow guns on state public-school and university campuses because it was not enforceable. Brewer also told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren Monday she vetoed legislation requiring public-office candidates provide birth certificates because it was a “distraction” to state business.

“First, I want to say that I am a strong advocate of the Second Amendment — have a long 30-year history of supporting the Second Amendment and the Constitution,” Brewer said. “But the bill was just very poorly and sloppily written, and it just was not defined in the manner of which people could interpret it or could it be enforced.

“So you know, enough already — the legislation should have been crystal clear,” she said. “And so again, I moved forward and I vetoed the bill — no guns on our university campuses, no guns on our kindergarten campuses.”

As to the legislation on requiring candidates provide birth or baptismal certificates, Brewer told Van Susteren “it is something that I felt very, very uncomfortable with and I feel that it serves no purpose.”

“You know, bottom line is, is that I just have to call them as I see them — and it doesn’t help Arizona,” Brewer said, adding there is a possibility state lawmakers will override her veto. “This bill is a distraction, and we just simply need to get on with the state’s business.”
