A Chicago grandmother is in custody without bond after allegedly killing her 6-month-old granddaughter by beating her with a sledgehammer and then cutting her throat.
Alfreda Giedrojc, 61, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Vivian Summers. Prosecutor Michael Deno told reporters that Vivian’s father came to the home with his daughter on Sunday and then left her there while he went to work on a project at a nearby home, CBS Chicago reported
. Giedrojc’s husband also left.

“After the defendant’s husband left, the defendant took the victim off the couch where she had been sleeping and put her on the floor,” Deno said, according to CBS. “She picked up a sledgehammer that she had placed in her closet the night before and hit the victim repeatedly in the head and body with the hammer.”
When the baby was still moving, CBS said, Giedrojc allegedly got a knife and cut her throat.
In the first hearing on the case held Monday, Deno said Giedrojc admitted to those acts on videotape, the Oaklawn Patch reported
Deno did not comment on what could have caused Giedrojc to commit such a horrific crime and did not say whether a mental illness evaluation was being done, Patch said.
CBS said sources had mentioned that Giedrojc may have thought about or even attempted suicide in the past. Patch reported that Giedrojc did not have a criminal record.
“I have never seen anything like this. It’s a tragedy,” CBS quoted Oak Lawn Police Chief Michael Murray from a Monday news conference. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. This is going to be a very difficult time for everybody.”
“It’s tragic,” a neighbor of Giedrojc, Caren Hennessy, told the Chicago Sun Times
. “Someone who can do that to a child isn’t in their right mind.”
