A domestic dispute in Oregon got hairy on Monday when a man tried to use his dreadlocks to choke his girlfriend, according to police in Portland.

The victim, whose identity wasn't released by police, claimed Caleb Grotberg, 32, had grown increasingly violent during an argument and at one point used his long, matted locks as a weapon in an attempt to strangle her.

Though not seriously injured during the altercation, the woman was taken to a Portland area hospital where she was treated for "numerous, non-life-threatening injuries," said Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau in an ABC News report.

"I have never heard of anybody using dreadlocks as a weapon," Simpson told NBC News. "Not to make light of a domestic violence situation, because it was terrifying, but this is a very Portland-centric type of situation."

Grotberg fled the scene, but police later found him in the neighborhood. He had brown dreadlocked hair down to the middle of his back.

Police took Grotberg to the Multnomah County Jail. He is facing multiple domestic violence felony charges, including kidnapping in the second degree, attempted assault in the second degree, assault in the fourth degree, menacing, and strangulation.
