Republican candidate Newt Gingrich challenged President Barack Obama to seven debates if the former House speaker wins the party’s nomination.
“When I am the Republican nominee, in my acceptance speech, if the president has not yet accepted the debate…I will announce that the White House is now my scheduler, and wherever he goes, I will show up four hours later, and I will take apart his speech,” Gingrich told Sean Hannity on Monday.
The current leader in the polls said he has no problem trailing the incumbent around the country and reveling in the media fanfare that surely will follow.
“I’m going to do what Lincoln did to Douglas,” Gingrich said, referring to the series of debates between Abraham Lincoln, the Republican Illinois Senate candidate, and the Democratic incumbent, Stephen Douglas. “You can imagine the volume of media we’ll get doing that.”
Gingrich said he’s 95 percent sure Obama will accept the debates and will allow the president to use a teleprompter.
“If you had to defend Obamacare for three hours, wouldn’t you want a teleprompter?” he asked. “I don’t want a teleprompter. It would inhibit me.”
Gingrich also clarified his immigration stance on the radio program. He said controlling the U.S. border must come before any legislation can be considered about immigration, and that English should become the government’s official language. Further, he proposed a less-cumbersome and less-expensive process for obtaining a visa, as well as a streamlined deportation process for felonious immigrants.
He defended his proposal to create a citizen-led panel that would evaluate longtime illegals and determine whether they can be granted residency.
“I am against amnesty,” he said. “I have consistently been against amnesty. Are you really going to go in and break their family apart, arrest that person, and kick them out?” he asked. “I don’t think the American people will do that.”
