Zimmerman Gun Factory Tour Criticized by Own Lawyers (Video)

George Zimmerman's tour of the Florida gun factory that manufactured the weapon he used to kill Trayvon Martin has drawn critical reactions from many, including his own lawyers.

Zimmerman visited the Kel-Tec plant in Cocoa, Fla., last week, the same facility that made the PF-9 pistol used in the shooting death of 17-year-old Martin, according to TMZ. The former neighborhood watchman also reportedly inquired about the legality of buying a shotgun during the tour.

Zimmerman, 29, was acquitted of murder in July in a case that raised racial tensions and polarized the nation. Prosecutors argued Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, profiled, followed, and then killed Martin in February 2012. Zimmerman's legal team claimed self-defense.

Just weeks after the divisive verdict, Zimmerman was pulled over for speeding in Texas and told the officer he was carrying a gun in his glove compartment.

Now, his tour of the gun factory is drawing criticism.

"We understand how George visiting the factory that produces the gun used to shoot Trayvon Martin is seen as inappropriate," Shawn Vincent, spokesman for Zimmerman's lawyer Mark O'Mara, told Reuters on Friday. "We certainly would not have advised him to go to the factory that made the gun that he used to shoot Trayvon Martin through the heart… We got the verdict that we believe is just, and the rest of George's life is up to George."

Joe Scarborough, of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," blasted Zimmerman and those who believe he is innocent of any wrongdoing in Martin's death.

"There's a certain faction of the American political system that has embraced George Zimmerman as a hero," Scarborough said on-air during Monday's show. "I said from day one, during the trial, that it was going to be hard to convict this man. That doesn't mean that many on the far right need to embrace this man, whose own lawyers are now running away from him."

"He is a man who recklessly went in, was told by the cops to stay away. Regardless of what you think of him, he disobeyed the cops' orders and he kept chasing this guy. And if you want to quibble about the last seconds, whom was fighting whom, that’s fine, quibble about it, that's why he's walking the streets… This is not a man who Republicans should embrace as a hero."

TMZ obtained a photo of a smiling Zimmerman shaking hands with the factory owner's son.
