The opponent for George Zimmerman's celebrity boxing match was announced Wednesday — and it's rapper DMX.

DMX was selected out of 15,000 applicants, promoter Damon Feldman told TMZ. The boxing match will be three rounds at a date, time, and location to be announced.

Thirty-year-old Zimmerman, acquitted in the death of Trayvon Martin, said boxing has been his hobby since before the 2012 shooting, according to Radar Online. He said some of the proceeds from the event will go to an animal rescue charity.

A representative for DMX, 43, said the rapper will release a statement when an official agreement is reached, according to the New York Daily News.

News about the event has caused an uproar among supporters of Martin, including a Change.org petition to cancel the match. The Rev. Al Sharpton also commented on the event.

"We must be very careful not to glorify or in any way sidestep the implications of making someone whose only claim to fame was killing an unarmed young man named Trayvon Martin into a cultural celebrity or hero," Sharpton said, according to the Daily News.

"It is perfectly legal for him to exploit his fame but we should never forget what he is famous for and not behave like he is a celebrity based on gifts or talent or contributions to society," Sharpton continued.

But Zimmerman has appeared in the news multiple times since his acquittal. He helped a family escape an overturned vehicle, has been pulled over for speeding, was questioned by police after assault reports by his ex-wife and girlfriend, and in December, Zimmerman sold a flag painting on eBay for more than $100,000.

News of the boxing match has drawn a wide range of comments on Twitter:
