Former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush have become unlikely friends since leaving office, a fact that was brought home at a leadership event they participated in together in Dallas on Thursday.

The two former commanders in chief spoke together at a graduation ceremony for the Presidential Leadership Scholars program at the George W. Bush Presidential Center. The men said they both had a lot in common, including two terms each as president, similar ages, and governorship of southern states.

Bush noted that Clinton was “a brother from another mother,” and that Clinton “hung out in Maine” more than he did, CBS News reported. Bush also referenced the humility with which Clinton handled his victory over George H.W. Bush in 1992, and the relationship that developed between the older Bush and Clinton during the presidential transition that continues with Clinton’s annual visits to Kennebunkport, Maine, to this day.

The men’s comments were taken as understated jabs at current President Donald Trump, whom both former presidents opposed.

“If you want to be president, realize it’s about the people, not about you,” Clinton said, CBS reported.

Bush said humility was the most important characteristic needed by a president.

“I think it’s really important to know what you don’t know and listen to people who do know what you don’t know,” he said, according to the Daily Mail.

Clinton said too many people today “get news in silos,” and that people have separated into “like-minded communities,” CBS reported. “Diverse groups make better decisions than homogenous ones,” he said.

Twitter was only too happy to lump the two former presidents together and criticize both.
