George Clooney is speaking out on the allegations that film exec Harvey Weinstein harassed and sexually assaulted many women in Hollywood, calling Weinstein’s behavior “indefensible” and “disturbing.”

Clooney credits his first big role role as both an actor and a director to Weinstein, but said he didn’t see any inappropriate behavior with women when the two were together.

“It’s indefensible. That’s the only word you can start with,” Clooney told The Daily Beast. “Harvey’s admitted to it, and it’s indefensible. I’ve known Harvey for 20 years ... we’ve had dinners, we’ve been on location together, we’ve had arguments. But I can tell you that I’ve never seen any of this behavior — ever.”

Women including Ashley Judd, Meryl Streep, and Dame Judi Dench have accused Weinstein of harassing them or others and sexually assaulting other young women. A New York Times expose reported there have been at least eight settlements against Weinstein so far, and a local TV reporter claimed he masturbated in front of her in an out-of-the-way part of his restaurant.

Weinstein apologized for his conduct, but was fired from his Weinstein Company by the board.

The film mogul produced a string of hit movies including Oscar-winners “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Good Will Hunting,” and the television show “Project Runway.”

Weinstein has long presented himself publicly as a supporter of women’s rights and issues and has won humanitarian awards. He hosted a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton last year, gave an internship to Malia Obama earlier this year, and marched in a Park City, Utah, women’s march during the Sundance Film Festival in January.
