Furby Doll BOOM Evolves for Digital Age With iPhone App (Video)

The newest model of the Furby toy, Furby BOOM, has now evolved to fit the digital age, complete with a companion app that allows kids to feed, bathe, and care for their electronic robot pets with their iPhones and iPads.

Furby first debuted during the 1998 holiday season and enjoyed a wave of success with more than 40 million units sold over the first three years of original production.

The plush creature, which resembles a hamster or an owl, is meant to give kids an interactive experience. They can talk to their Furbies, feed and care for them, make them dance, tickle them, and put them to sleep.

Toymaker Hasbro has revived Furby twice — once in 2005 and again in 2012. But the new 2013 Furby BOOM comes complete with a digital makeover.

For example, the Furby's eyes are now LCD screens, which allow it to emote more realistically. Kids can also manage their robot pets virtually using their phones or tablets.

"Various screens in the app let you tend to [the Furby's] needs, with minigames like a shower or a toilet allowing you to relieve your Furby in each of the stats (yup, it poops!)," a review in PCMag.com reads. "If this seems familiar, the Tamagochi virtual pet had similar needs. You'll point your smart device toward the Furby to spray it with water or let it sit on a virtual toilet."

However, on the downside, the new Furbies are more needy than previous generations.

"It's still a Furby, so it will bore you or keep you entertained in the same manner as previous Furbys," PCMag.com said in the review. "New interactive elements make the Furby more needy."

The Furby BOOM has a suggested retail price of $64.99, but is available on Amazon.com for as little as $40.
