A Phoenix businessman has pledged to spend millions of dollars of his own money to put an initiative on the November ballot that would let Arizonans vote on the constitutionality of federal laws.
John Biltis, owner of TAG Employer Services, told the
Arizona Star the proposed initiative reinforces language in the Arizona constitution recognizing the U.S. Constitution as “the supreme law of land.” But it adds a provision saying the federal government cannot pass laws in violation.
“We’re getting to a point that the federal government is so far beyond their constitutional limit that they don’t even ask questions if something’s constitutional anymore,” Biltis said. “Once you stop playing by the rules, it gets a little scary.”
If the referendum is adopted, Arizonans would be able “to reject any federal action that they determine violates the United States Constitution” either through a vote in the state House and Senate, with the consent of the governor, or by direct ballot action, Biltis told the newspaper on Monday.
Biltis said the government began undermining personal liberty in the 1930s and is now in full-attack mode with laws like the Patriot Act and the Obama administration’s federal healthcare mandates.
In order to have his referendum placed on the ballot, Biltis needs 259,213 valid signatures on petitions by July 5. In pursuit of that goal, he has retained a political consulting firm to help out.
