"I never imagined I would be sitting here with my 12th child," Kateri Schwandt, who goes by the nickname Teri, told NBC News.
"We didn't know what he would be when he was first born. We don't find out. It's always a boy, but it's always a surprise."
The family, which lives in Rockford, Mich., started when Jay and Teri Schwandt met and married at 18. They had their first child while they were both studying at Ferris State University — Teri Schwandt got a master's in social work while her husband went on to obtain a law degree from Cooley Law School.
Then the boys kept coming.
Now, Teri Schwandt is a stay-at-home mom. Luckily, she gets a lot of help from her older sons.
But the Schwandts both wonder about having a little girl one day and haven’t yet ruled out more children.
"If we were going to have a girl, it would have happened by now," Teri told MLive.com
. "You don’t have 12 boys waiting for that girl."
Jay Schwandt says if they are blessed with a 13th child, he hopes that "13 will be the charm" and that they are able to finally have a daughter.
